About the book - I appreciated that it was written in a friendly style easy to understand. She explained the underlying science and references to back up the claims without being too technical or overwhelming. And although she was personal and personable, this book was not filled with all kinds of “testimonials” from patients. (This is a trend among this type of book that I have found really annoying and off-putting.).About the program - Until I tried this Cleanse I’ve never been able to substitute a smoothie or shake for a meal and feel good. The recipes here left me feeling satisfied and strong for hours, which is amazing to me! And despite the 5 days being packed with a full time job, care for an elderly relative, and a family funeral I had no trouble preparing my food and no temptation to eat off plan. In the five days on the plan I lost 1# of fat (2# overall) and half an inch from my waist. This was without exercise or even daily walks. As a 60 yo menopausal woman with hypothyroidism, this was a real breakthrough for me.After reading through some other reviews I want to clarify that although every shake and smoothie recipe does list a choice of using one of her own brands of bone broth or collagen powder, she also lists the exact amounts of collagen powder to use if you choose a different brand. I went through the entire five days and didn’t use any of the products she sells. People who said you have to buy her products or that the book was just hype to sell stuff must not have really read or paid attention to what she wrote. The shopping list is mostly produce with no exotic ingredients. And finally, although this was a “5 day program” she was also very clear as to the importance of lifestyle changes and making a habit of choosing foods good for the body. This is not a “crash diet” but presented as a very satisfying gateway to lifelong improvement, and I found that to be true. I’m sure it won’t work for everyone, but the program deserves respect.
